If we weren’t in the darkest timeline right now, Marvel’s Black Widow would be arriving in theaters in a little under a month. Unfortunately, the globe is dealing with a dangerous pandemic, and the entire movie release calendar is being shuffled around every week as studios push back some of the biggest movies of the year following the closure of pretty much all movie theaters everywhere. Last week, Marvel Studios announced a new November release date for the movie starring Scarlett Johansson, and now a couple of new Black Widow photos have been released.New Black Widow Photos
First up, we have Scarlett Johansson being cautious as other agents from the Red Room Academy are in pursuit. They’re decked out in the standard tactical catsuit while Natasha Romanoff appears to be caught off guard, wearing only her street clothes.
As the most recent trailer for Black Widow explained, the Red Room operatives are being controlled by the villain Taskmaster, who has manipulated them by somehow giving them full consciousness, but unable to make choices of their own free will.
Romanoff’s surrogate sister and fellow Red Room agent Yelena Belova Florence Pugh, above somehow escaped, and she’s getting their makeshift family back together, including David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov AKA Red Guardian and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff.
Together, they’ll try to take down Taskmaster, who is quite the formidable opponent due to the fact that he can mimic the fighting styles of the rest of The Avengers, such as Black Panther, Captain America and Spider-Man, not to mention Black Widow herself. Oh, and his identity is unknown too, so that’s fun.
Will any of them besides Natasha make it out alive? Let’s not forget that she said The Avengers were the only family she has left throughout the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Plus, she recently offered up this perspective in an interview with Total Film via sister site Games Radar:
“I think part of Kevin Feige’s genius is that he always thinks about what fans expect out of these films and then gives them something that they never could’ve dreamed of. The idea of Natasha Romanoff in a family drama is the least expected thing, and I had to wrap my head around what that was going to be because there’s such a big tonal shift.”
Directed by Cate Shortland and produced by Kevin Feige, Marvel’s Black Widow now hits theaters on November 6, 2020 after being delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. The final Black Widow trailer is out, and it shines a spotlight on a villain who had been only fleetingly referenced in earlier footage: the Taskmaster. We get a much more detailed look at the character in the trailer, and from the looks of it, fighting Taskmaster is the equivalent of fighting the entire roster of The Avengers at the same time, since he seems to be replicating all their fighting styles.
In the comics, Taskmaster injected himself with a serum which augmented his body's procedural memory potential. What this means is that the comic version of Taskmaster is able to absorb knowledge instantaneously and replicate movements perfectly after seeing them performed once. This allows him to duplicate the fighting style of anyone and beat them at their own game. Over a long history of copying moves, Taskmaster has emerged as one of the most dangerous fighters in Marvel comics.
It is unclear whether the Taskmaster in the movie has a similar backstory as his comic counterpart, but he is shown to have some sort of recording equipment embedded in his face mask and can be seen studying footage of Black Widow in action to learn her moves.
This sets up the fight scenes the Taskmaster engages in throughout the trailer. We see him throwing a shield with the precision of Captain America. We also see him draw out claws during a fight and attack his opponent in a manner reminiscent of Black Panther. Then there is the bow and arrow which he clearly learned to use from watching footage of Hawkeye. And finally, his grounded hand-to-hand style of fighting seems inspired by Black Widow herself.
What all of this means is that Natasha aka Black Widow will have to reckon with not just one but multiple fighting styles, all based on her allies that she has fought alongside in the past. Taskmaster's general style and demeanor is quite reminiscent of the Winter Solider when he was still a villain. Both characters wear masks, a rarity in the MCU, and are shown to be silently and brutally efficient at taking out enemies. Also like the Winter Soldier, Taskmaster appears to be a footsoldier for a much larger and sinister organization.
Could this mean that Taskmaster will follow a similar trajectory to Winter Soldier? Where he starts out as a masked baddie, but is later revealed to be a good guy from Captain America's past? After all, the Taskmaster from the comics later evolved into an anti-hero. And the identity of the movie Taskmaster has been purposely kept hidden in the promos so far, which would make sense if he has already appeared as a different person from Natasha's life. All these questions and more will soon be answered once Black Widow makes its way to theaters on the 24th of April, when fans will finally get to enjoy an entire standalone movie centered around Natasha Romanoff.
Being in a disagreement with the official Auschwitz Memorial is not an ideal position for anyone, but given the circumstances, Hunters creator and co-showrunner David Weil seems to be doing it about as respectfully and thoughtfully as possible.
Over the weekend, the official Auschwitz Memorial Twitter account criticized the new Amazon series, which stars Al Pacino as the leader of a group of Nazi hunters in the 1970s, for “inventing a fake game of human chess” for a concentration camp flashback, calling it “dangerous foolishness & caricature.” Now Weil has responded, explaining his decision in a way that comes off as level-headed instead of overly defensive.

Auschwitz was the most notorious concentration camp in the world, the site of unfathomable horrors and over a million deaths in the 1940s. Yesterday, the memorial’s official account condemned Hunters and tweeted an image of the fictional chess match scene in question, saying that they “honor the victims by preserving factual accuracy.” Weil responded in a letter to Deadline, pointing out that the show was never meant to be an exact recreation of historical events and explaining that he went out of his way to avoid depicting the “specific, real acts of trauma” that occurred there.
This is obviously a tricky topic, and it’s inevitable that people are going to feel strongly about it. From my perspective, all I can do is say that I appreciate how Weil’s response actually feels like it came from an adult who seems to be aware of the responsibility that comes with tackling a story which intersects with one of the most horrible eras of human history. This is clearly something that weighed heavily on the minds of the people who made the series: when we interviewed the co-showrunner, they told us “[The Holocaust scenes] were fictionalized, in part, because we didn’t think that we would have the ability to do those stories justice. We weren’t there for that.” We can talk all day about the quality of the series your mileage may vary, but at the very least, I feel like other showrunners should use this as an example of how to thoughtfully, tactfully, and respectfully respond to controversy.

Although “The L Word: Generation Q” may have tried desperately to speak to a “new generation” of queer women and non-binary folks, fresher creative voices quickly rose to the top in its place. Though people still watched. Showtime’s “Work in Progress” was the best queer comedy of the year, Netflix’s “Feel Good” was an unexpected delight, and “Vida” is returning just in time for queer audiences to catch up on the best show about queer women of color on TV. Yet another contender released a promising first trailer today: “Betty” is a stylish and youthful portrait of Brooklyn teen skaters that already appears extremely queer.
The six-part half-hour arrives on HBO from filmmaker Crystal Moselle, who quickly made waves in 2015 with her her riveting documentary hybrid “The Wolfpack.” “Betty” is adapted from her second feature, the similarly hybridized “Skate Kitchen,” which followed a group of teenage girl skaters in New York City. The film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival to positive reviews and was released by Magnolia Pictures that year.
In his B+ review of “Skate Kitchen” out of Sundance, IndieWire’s Eric Kohn wrote: “The streetwise alternative to ‘Girls,’ the movie weaves together such a complete vision of its subjects that the rest of the world barely exists. Of course, there's a long-standing precedent to capturing this subculture — ‘Kids’ did it, with more adventurous storytelling twists, more than 20 years ago — but Moselle's subjects hold their own with the surprising ability to clarify their emotions through the cathartic process of hanging out.”
“Betty” features many of the film’s original stars, most of whom had not acted before, including Kabrina Adams, Dede Lovelace, Nina Moran, Rachelle Vinberg, and Ajani Russell. All accomplished skaters in their own right, the first trailer shows the charismatic crew navigating various crushes and friendship trials with compelling panache and humor.
“Betty” is directed, co-written, and executive produced by Moselle. Lesley Arfin and Patricia Breen are also co-writers. Arfin, who also EPs, is a comedy writer best known for co-creating the Netflix series “Love” with Judd Apatow and Paul Rust.
