It’s time again to take a look at the latest in physical media. This week finds Joaquin Phoenix dancing up a storm, Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe farting, Rian Johnson’s first attempt at a mystery, and some cursed body parts. What else is there to say about Joker at this point? The Todd Phillips-directed take on the Clown Prince of Crime generated plenty of controversies before anyone had even laid eyes on it. Then it somehow became an awards season fixture. Then a box office smash. So where do people stand? The movie is unquestionably popular – it wouldn’t have made all that money otherwise. But a growing disdain has arisen for Phillips’ dark, moody, nihilistic film. And it’s understandable – Joker has many flaws, its screenplay being the biggest of the bunch. But at the same time, Phillips does such an exemplary job crafting this tale, creating a Gotham that feels run down and sleazy. Is he ripping off the work of Scorsese and Friedkin? He sure is. But he’s doing it well. Really, though, the main thing that elevates Joker is Joaquin Phoenix. One of our best living actors, Phoenix gives the part his all, and creates a fully realized character. His Arthur Fleck is too nasty to be sympathetic, but it’s easy to pity him. As Arthur goes more and more insane, Phoenix goes deeper into character, and the results are hypnotic.
Why It’s Worth Owning on Blu-ray:
The 4K Blu-ray looks wonderful, capturing the grit and grain that Phillips embedded into the frame. It also comes with several behind-the-scenes featurettes that delve into the process of nearly everything here, from inception to character creation and beyond. Phillips talks about how he approached the film wanting to “make a great character study – and get people to see it.” The result: crafting a character study narrative onto a familiar character. Other topics of discussion: Phillips and Phoenix talk about the creation of Arthur’s weird, haunting dance moves. As they tell it, the first time Arthur dances – in a public bathroom after committing his first murder – the scene was written so that he runs into the bathroom to ditch his weapon. But Phillips felt that wasn’t true to the character, so he and Phoenix hashed things out on set for over an hour until Phoenix struck on the idea that the scene was really about the Joker “emerging” from Arthur, and that the best way to present that would be with this strange, slow dance. The rest is history.

The 35th Film Independent Spirit Awards were handed out last night, honoring achievements in independent cinema in a celebration of artist-driven films made with an economy of means by filmmakers whose films embody diversity, innovation and uniqueness of vision. The ceremony honored two movies that were overlooked by the Oscars in a big way, with The Farewell winning Best Feature and Adam Sandler taking home Best Male Lead for Uncut Gems. And those weren’t the only awards those two films walked away with either. Get the full list of 2020 Independent Spirit Awards nominations.
On top of a win for Best Feature, The Farewell was also honored with the Best Supporting Female award for Zhao Shuzhen, who played the adorable, delightful grandmother at the center of the movie starring Awkwafina. Somehow she didn’t end up with a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars, but we’re glad she was honored by the Indie Spirit Awards.
However, Uncut Gems walked away with a couple more major awards. In addition to Adam Sandler winning Best Male Lead, the award for Best Director went to Benny Safdie & Josh Safdie. Hopefully that helps make up for their lack of an Oscar nomination too, since Uncut Gems also didn’t receive any nominations this year. The chaotic, anxiety-filled movie also landed Best Editing if you need any more proof that this movie deserved to get some Oscars nominations.

Uncut Gems generated a massive buzz for its inclusion of unexpected guest performances from the likes of Kevin Garnett and The Weeknd but it turns out there was one potential performance we all missed out on. According to Harlem rap godfather Cam'ron, he was supposed to star in the film alongside Jonah Hill and Manhattan Diamond District jewelers Izzy and Joseph Aranbayev aka Avianne & Co., but he was ultimately bypassed for unknown reasons.
Cam posted to Instagram in response to a feature on Complex about Avianne & Co. and their role in helping to make the Safdie brothers' film a reality. The feature reveals that the Aranbayev brothers were supposed to join the other sibling duo in crafting the film — however, despite providing many of the jewelry pieces used in it, they didn't get the opportunity to appear in it themselves.
Cam'ron not only confirmed their story, he added a detail of his own: That he believes Josh Safdie used him to get to the Aranbayev brothers, as he was one of their loyal customers. He complains that the role they wanted to give his was “sucker ass role” and that he didn't even get a shout-out in the credits. However, he insists that Safdie is “still my guy” and jokingly requests a consultant fee, ultimately congratulates everyone involved on the film's success.

The Television Academy is adjusting the eligibility and voting deadlines for this year’s Primetime Emmy calendar in response to concerns made by TV communication executives and awards strategists in the current coronavirus climate.
The dates for the Creative Emmy Awards and Primetime Emmy shows remain unchanged respectively on Sept. 12-13 and Sept. 20, and will only be moved should state and national safety directives deem them to be, should the coronavirus worsen.
This morning’s big changes involve the entry deadline moving close to four weeks from May 11 to June 5, and the Phase one voting period jumping from June 15-29 to July 2-13 with the new nominations announcement date being July 28 instead of July 14. The Phase one period thus shrinks from 15 days to 12 days.
Phase 2 voting, which was originally set for Aug 17-31, will start slightly later, and shave off four days, now occurring between Aug. 21-31.
Also being extended is the eligibility date for hanging episodes for regular series and limited series, as the TV Academy takes into account production and programming delays. Now, all hanging episodes must broadcast or post on an accessible platform by June 30, instead of May 31. Both regular and limited series must still premiere by the end of this year’s eligibility date which remains May 31. A minimum of six episodes continues to be required for a show to be qualified in the series category. A limited series in its entirety must air or post on a platform before June 30, and if it doesn’t, then the limited series will qualify in the 2020-2021 Emmy year.
Meanwhile, all TV Academy FYC events “whether with a live audience, streaming or recorded for posting on a viewing platform” per the org remain suspended for the current Emmy season.
In recent weeks, the TV Academy appeared to be standing firm on their original voting and eligibility dates. However, TV publicists and Emmy campaign strategists reportedly voiced their reservations about promoting too heavily and too soon, thus wanting to exercise a greater degree of sensitivity in a spring that’s been rocked by COVID-19: Many productions have shut down, leaving many out of work, and the whole atmosphere across the nation is rather dour as we all self quarantine. Emmy season has traditionally been decked with glam marketing, billboards, food trucks, stunt events, big DVD boxes and soirees. Earlier this year, to tame some of that, the TV Academy banned DVD mailers to voters, and in doing so, favored online screeners. The hope here with the TV Academy’s tweaking of the FYC calendar is that we’ll be on the other side of the curve in regards to coronavirus, and in a lighter-spirited environment.
