Get ready to Run with a trailer for a new HBO series from executive producer Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Merritt Wever and Domhnall Gleeson are college sweethearts who haven’t seen each other in over a decade – and that’s about to change. The duo made a pact 17 years ago to run away from whatever their lives may be if they sent each other a one-word text – a pact they now intend to honor.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, creator of Fleabag and Killing Eve, is a name that always gets my attention, and she’s serving as executive producer on Run, a new HBO series with an intriguing premise: Ruby Richardson Meritt Wever “walks away from her ordinary life in the suburbs to revisit her past with her college boyfriend, Billy Johnson Domhnall Gleeson, with whom she made a pact 17 years prior that if either one of them texted the word ‘RUN’ and the other replied with the same, they would drop everything and meet in Grand Central Station and travel across America together.”
The footage here looks both darkly funny and even a little mysterious, because it doesn’t give too much away. It’s like the Before trilogy meets The Commuter. This is the perfect way to sell a series. Wever Marriage Story and Gleeson the Star Wars sequels are both great, and I love the idea of them working together here with this scenario. The show il also feature Waller-Bridge as Laurel, a woman who Ruby and Billy meet on their journey; Rich Sommer as Laurence, Ruby’s husband; Tamara Podemski as police detective Babe Cloud what a great name; and Archie Panjabi as Fiona, Billy’s former PA.
Waller-Bridge is executive producing with Vicky Jones, who directed the stage production of Fleabag, and also served as a writer on Killing Eve. Jones serves as a writer on this series. Emily Leo and Kate Dennis are also executive-producing, with Dennis directing the first episode. Run debuts on HBO on April 12.
We’d all like to get away from it all right now, but…we can’t. But we can live vicariously through Domhnall Gleeson and Merritt Wever, who drop everything to travel across the country in Run, a new HBO series from writer Vicky Jones and producer Phoebe Waller-Bridge Fleabag. A new Run trailer gives us a better look at the series, and it looks fast-paced, funny, mysterious, and sexy. What more do you need?
Written and produced by Vicky Jones, Run follows a woman who leaves her life behind when her ex-boyfriend shoots her a text message and reminds her of a pact they made back in college. Merritt Wever is Ruby Richardson, “who walks away from her ordinary life in the suburbs to revisit her past with her college boyfriend, Billy Johnson Gleeson, with whom she made a pact 17 years prior that if either one of them texted the word “RUN” and the other replied with the same, they would drop everything and meet in Grand Central Station and travel across America together.”
It’s a simple enough premise, and based on this trailer, Run is having a lot of fun with it. I’m really digging the chemistry between Wever and Gleeson, and I’m also enjoying how it looks like the story opens up to be more than meets the eye as it unfolds. And hey, producer Phoebe Waller-Bridge shows up here as “Laurel, a woman who Ruby and Billy meet on their journey.” Other cast members include Rich Sommer Mad Men as Laurence, Ruby’s husband; Tamara Podemski Coroner as police detective Babe Cloud and Archie Panjabi The Good Wife as Fiona, Billy’s former PA.
Run debuts Sunday, April 12 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on HBO. It’ll also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and partners’ streaming platforms. Watch it, and pretend that you, too, are running away from all of this crazy crap going on right now.
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. And Betty Broderick may be one of the most famous real-life woman scorned. Dirty John, Bravo’s true-crime series based on the podcast of the same name about the twisted tale of con artist John Meehan, is back with a new criminal and a new network. Under USA, Dirty John has been rebranded a true-crime anthology series, with convicted murderer Betty Broderick as the central figure in the second season, as played by an absolutely unhinged Amanda Peet. Watch the Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story trailer below.
Dirty John The Betty Broderick Story Trailer
There are plenty of true-crime series out there, but only one focuses specifically on the messy marital dramas that belong in a Lifetime movie. That’s right, Dirty John is back. After tackling the master manipulator John Meehan Eric Bana and his long con of wife Debra Newell Connie Britton in season 1, Dirty John has found another terrible relationship to turn its lens to: that of Dan and Betty Broderick, who Oprah Winfrey once referred to as “one of America’s messiest divorces.” And that was even before the murder came into the picture.
Amanda Peet and USA favorite Christian Slater star as Betty and Dan, respectively — a happily married couple, until a midlife crisis leads Dan to leave his wife for a younger model. The trailer plays pretty sympathetically to Betty’s perspective, seeding in some doubts about her “insanity,” as she accuses her husband of having her put away into a mental institution. The real-life Betty Broderick received 32 years in prison for killing her husband and his second wife, Linda, on November 5, 1989. During the trial, Broderick argued that she was a battered wife who suffered years of physical and psychological abuse, which the trailer does touch on.
But then Peet delivers lines like, “I would’ve been treated better if I had been a dog and served my master. I’m amazed it only took one bullet to kill Dan Broderick,” with a soft smile on her face, and it’s pretty clear where the blame lies. We get shots of Betty vandalizing her husband’s new home, driving her car into his door, and Amanda Peet giving absolutely chilling grins.
Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story premieres later this summer on USA.
