The sexiest new property in the streaming wars is: books! Or at least, the women behind them, per HBO Max’s newest original series from Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina creator Robert Aguirre-Sacasa. Aguirre-Sacasa is developing two sexy Gothic literary series for HBO Max, the first of which offers the sexy Mary Shelley take to compete with Apple’s upcoming sexy Emily Dickinson series. And knowing what Aguirre-Sacasa has cooked up with his Riverdale extended universe, it will all be very, very sexy.
Deadline reports that Aguirre-Sacasa is developing two literary series for HBO Max. The first is The Shelley Society, which follows a young Mary Shelley as she battles supernatural threats and monsters; while the second is the Dracula-inspired family drama The Brides, which reimagines the bewitching Brides of Dracula as a trio of “powerful, diverse female leads.” Both will hail from the Gothic horror genre and be terribly, terribly sexy.
Co-created by Aguirre-Sacasa, who writes and executive produces alongside Riverdale writers Tessa Leigh Williams and James DeWille, The Shelley Society is described as “Victorian X-Files.” In this twist on the literary legend, Mary Shelley is a leader of a “band of Romantic outlaws—among them, her lovers Percy and Lord Byron—against all manner of supernatural threats and monsters…including Frankenstein author Shelley’s own iconic Creature.” It certainly sounds like even more of a departure than the anachronistic Hailee Steinfeld-starring Dickinson, but anything will be an improvement over the dull and lifeless 2017 biopic Mary Shelley starring Elle Fanning.
While Aguirre-Sacasa is set to act as showrunner for The Shelley Society, the producer is keeping busy with a second HBO Max show, The Brides, which is produced with Berlanti Productions. The Brides adds a soapy twist to the iconic vampire “sisters” who seduce and bewitch men into Dracula’s castle, following the trio of “empowered, immortal women and the things they do to maintain wealth, prestige, legacy—and their non-traditional family.” Aguirre-Sacasa has been long trying to bring The Brides to life, first developing the series for NBC during the 2015-2016 TV season. The newest incarnation will lean “stronger into horror and sexuality,” says Deadline.
Aguirre-Sacasa already pushes boundaries, both in depictions of teen sexuality and of rational plot occurrences in network shows like Riverdale and Katy Keene. On Netflix, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is alarmingly bloody for a series aimed at teens. Who knows what he’ll get up to on HBO Max?

NBC's three-part Chicagocrossover titled “Infection” came on strong Wednesday night, giving a boost to all three franchises for NBC in the adults 18-49 demographic.
Chicago Fireticked up two tenths with a 1.3 rating and 8.07 million viewers and was on par with its best numbers in a year. It was the same for Chicago Med 1.4, 8.83M, with the best result for that series since February 2018. Rounding out the mega-crossover was Chicago P.D. 1.4, 8.63M, which was up an impressive four tenths.
While the Chicagofranchise was saving Second City, The Masked Singer 2.1, 7.22M modulated to a higher key, ticking up a tenth to finish as the night's top-rated show. Fox's Almost Family 0.7, 2.48M held steady.
NBC won the night overall in total viewers and tied with Fox for the top demo spot.
Over at Riverdale 0.2, 830,000 on the CW, Archie and the gang took a two-tenths dip from its Season 4 premiere last week in early Live+Same Day numbers. The network's new Nancy Drew 0.2, 810K also slipped from its premiere.
At CBS, Survivor 1.4, 6.84M hit a season high while SEAL Team 0.7, 4.49M ticked up a tenth. Wrapping up primetime for CBS was S.W.A.T. 0.5, 3.60M, which dipped from last week.
ABC's Wednesday lineup stayed fairly steady. Modern Family 1.0, 4.19M took a step up as did Schooled 0.8, 3.43M. The Goldbergs 1.0, 4.15M, Single Parents 0.7, 2.81M and Stumptown 0.6, 2.81M were even.
As for Stumptown, it should be noted that the Cobie Smulders-fronted 10 PM drama based on the Greg Rucka graphic novel is the season's most-watched new series with 8.51 million viewers after seven days of TV playback. It is also the top gainer for a new series in L+7 playback in total viewers +4.20M and adults 18-49 +129%.

The Resistance becomes a full-blown rebellion, driven by Juliana Crain’s Alexa Davalos visions of a better world. A new Black insurgent movement emerges to fight the forces of Nazism and imperialism. As empires teeter, Chief Inspector Takeshi Kido Joel De La Fuente will find himself torn between his duty to his country and the bonds of family. Meanwhile, Reichsmarschall John Smith Rufus Sewell will be drawn towards the portal the Nazis have built to another universe, and the tantalizing possibility of stepping through a gateway to the path not taken.
The series is based on Philip K. Dick’s novel of the same name, and comes from executive producers by Ridley Scott and Frank Spotnitz. The series stars Rufus Sewell, Luke Kleintank, and Alexa Davalos. New cast members include Frances Turner, Clé Bennett, and Rich Ting. Here’s how Deadline describes their characters:
Turner will play Bell Mallory. Bell has escaped from a Nazi concentration camp into the Japanese Pacific States, where she meets Elijah Bennett, a militant Black nationalist. Together the couple become members of a cell in the BCR, an urban guerrilla movement dedicated to the liberation of African-Americans. Ting will play Captain Iijima, a driven, ambitious young detective in the Kempeitai and Kido’s close deputy.
The final season arrives on Amazon Prime Video on November 15, 2019.
