Amazon announced a then-untitled series from Joe and Anthony Russo in 2018. By 2019 they revealed it was a spy show with international spinoffs in the local language. Now called Citadel, Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, announced two stars of the series.Richard Madden and Priynaka Chopra star on Citadel
So far, the stars of Citadel have been Joe and Anthony Russo. This is an ambitious project with which they’re using their Marvel clout to try something new in television. Of course, there will be stars in front of the camera and Salke announced the two leads of Citadel.
“We’re excited to share news this morning that stars Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra have come aboard as the leads of this groundbreaking new show,” Salke said.
Madden is no stranger to sprawling epics, having starred on Game of Thrones. Amazon hasn’t actually confirmed whether Citadel is modern day or not. Since they are using actual locations, we can confirm it is set in the real world, not Westeros. Chopra got some espionage experience by working on ABC’s Quantico. They’re gearing up to shoot Citadel
After talking about Citadel or “the Untitled Russos Project” for so long, they’re finally ready to shoot. After all, the Russos have been a bit busy directing Marvel movies, a job that just ended seven months ago.
“Production will be underway this summer,” Salke said. Still no word on when we’ll see it, but filming this year probably means sometime in 2021.Amazon adds Mexico to Citadel international spinoffs
Amazon previously announced international spinoffs set in in Italy and India. Now they’ve added a Mexican iteration. So that’s four shows in development at the launch of Citadel.
“It will also include several creatively aligned but standalone local originally productions that can enhance the experience of engaging the show, Italy, India and Mexico included just to get started,” Salke said. “These shows are already underway being executed by some of the top talented creators from each of these territories, many who have been running some of our successful overseas series.”
Amazon hasn’t offered many more details about the Citadel spinoffs, but it doesn’t sound like Chopra and Madden would star in all of them. They’re talking about local productions which would also entail local stars. Perhaps the American Citadel would cross over, though.
“The idea is to create a truly global action-packed spy series,” Salke said. “It’s a totally innovative multi-faceted international approach to storytelling. I know I talked about this two TCAs ago but to finally have news on it is exciting for us.”...
Chris Evans wished Robert Downey Jr. a happy birthday with a classic line from Avengers: Endgame. Downey Jr. is more than likely celebrating his 55th birthday indoors and practicing social distancing with a few family members. There will not be a huge party with dozens of people, though he could do so digitally through the use of social media. Regardless, the former Captain America actor is making sure Downey Jr.'s birthday does not go unnoticed.
Robert Downey Jr. started the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the first Iron Man movie in 2008. Chris Evans later followed in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger and the two had instant chemistry together on the big screen when it came time for 2012's The Avengers. Now, Chris Evans is wishing Downey Jr. a very happy birthday. He posted an image of the two in character at Avengers HQ and captioned it with, 'Happy birthday to one of my absolute favorites! Love you 3000,' which is now a classic line from Avengers: Endgame.
Happy birthday to one of my absolute favorites! Love you 3000, @RobertDowneyJrpic.twitter.com/xkJmOivAdw— Chris Evans @ChrisEvans April 4, 2020
'I love you 3000' is what Tony Stark tells his daughter early on in Avengers: Endgame. Stark has seemingly given up on the idea of returning to the superhero world after the events of Infinity War and Captain America: Civil War. So, he starts the movie out as a somewhat content family man out in the country. However, when Earth's Mightiest Heroes try to get the band together, Stark, begins to get pulled back into the world, despite denying it early on. Before we know it, he's looking for ways to work with the Pym Particles to get the time heist plan going.
From there, MCU finally see Steve Rogers and Tony Stark bury the hatchet after years of strife. It was the closure that many felt the characters needed and it was inevitable. In real-life, Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. also needed some closure with the superhero world. Both actor frontloaded fans by teasing that Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame could be the end of the line for their days within the MCU, which wasn't exactly what everybody wanted to hear. After years of training and intense shooting days, Evans and Downey Jr. were ready for a much-needed breather.
So, Avengers: Endgame gave Steve Rogers and Tony Stark proper send offs. Stark went from the billionaire, self-involved brat to the hero who makes the ultimate sacrifice to save the universe from Thanos. Rogers, who has always done what he thought was best for others, finally did what was best for himself as he went back in time to spend his remaining years with Peggy Carter. While Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. may not share scenes on the big screen again together, they, along with the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, remain friends off the screen. Joe and Anthony Russo’s AGBO production of Mohsin Hamid’s bestseller Exit West is coming together, Deadline has confirmed. The project, which now has Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘s Riz Ahmed attached to star and executive produce, and Yann Demange directing, is also seeing Michelle and Barack Obama’s Higher Ground Productions and Netflix coming aboard.
A production start of this spring is being eyed.
Deadline broke the news when the Russos snapped up the rights to Exit West back in August 2017. At the time The Imitation Game director Morten Tyldum was set to direct. The novel was a 2017 Man Booker Prize long list selection, and it’s not a shocker to see Higher Ground attached here as Barack Obama included Exit West on his list of top books for that year.
AGBO's Mike Larocca is producing with Higher Ground's Tonia Davis and Priya Swaminathan. Exit West was originally developed with scribe Jessica Goldberg, but a new writer is expected to tackle the project.
Hamid wrote The Reluctant Fundamentalist and How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia. Exit West addresses similar themes, as it centers around the global refugee crisis. In an unidentified country, young Saeed and burqa-wearing Nadia flee their home after Saeed's mother is killed by a stray bullet and their city turns increasingly dangerous due to worsening violent clashes between the government and guerrillas. The couple joins other migrants traveling to safer havens via carefully guarded doors. Through one door, they wind up in a crowded camp on the Greek Island of Mykonos. Through another, they secure a private room in an abandoned London mansion populated mostly by displaced Nigerians. A third door takes them to California's Marin County. In each location, their relationship is by turns strengthened and tested by their struggle to find food, adequate shelter and a sense of belonging among emigrant communities.
The allegorical tale shows the contrast between the migrants' tenuous daily reality and that of the privileged second- or third-generation native population who'd prefer that their new alien neighbors simply disappear.
The Russos directed the highest grossing movie of all-time - Avengers: Endgame - last year which amassed $2.98 billion at the global box office. They recently finished the Tom Holland indie movie Cherry and will debut the Chris Hemsworth action drama Extraction on Netflix on April 24.
Higher Ground recently won best feature doc at the Oscars for American Factory, also made with Participant Media. Demange’s feature credits include fall 2019’s White Boy Rick about 1980s undercover teenage FBI informant Richard Wershe Jr.
