It's been nearly nine years since the last “Scream” film hit theaters, and anyone still anticipating a new installment in the beloved horror franchise can finally let out a sigh of relief or those fed up with Hollywood reboots can let out an exasperated scream — your call.
The Wrap has reported a new “Scream” movie is in development, with “Ready or Not” directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet attached to direct the new film. The publication also reported that Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original “Scream” film, will executive produce alongside Chad Villella, with development being handled by Spyglass Media. The upcoming film's producers include William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein. Villela, Bettinelli-Olpin, and Gillett's Radio Silence Productions collective previously worked on “V/H/S,” “Devil's Due,” and “Southbound.”
Horror website Bloody Disgusting first reported that Spyglass Media began developing the new “Scream” film in November 2019.
A Spyglass Media spokesperson declined to comment. A representative for Radio Silence Productions did not return a request for comment.
While additional details, including whether the film will be a reboot or continuation, are unknown, the news that a fifth “Scream” film will finally see the light of day could sit well with horror fans. The original “Scream,” which released in 1996, was an instant critical and commercial hit and helped revitalize public interest in the horror genre. The film was also notable for addressing and subverting many of the genre's clichés and mixing horror with comedy.
“Scream 2,” which released a year after the first film, holds the rare distinction of being a horror sequel that didn't become a significant critical flop. While the third and fourth “Scream” films and the MTV/VH1 “Scream” series weren't as well-received as the first two movies, “Scream” is still regarded as one of the most important horror franchises in the genre's history.
The upcoming “Scream” film's production is expected to begin in May, though that could change due to ongoing concerns about the coronavirus pandemic, according to The Wrap. The coronavirus has disrupted a wide variety of entertainment industry events and productions in recent days; production on shows such as “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “The Morning Show,” “Survivor,” “The Amazing Race,” “Russian Doll,” and “Little America,” among others, has been suspended.

We live in a golden age of artless documentaries that have no discernible purpose or ambition beyond regurgitating the recent past for people who would rather spend 90 minutes watching something on Netflix than 10 minutes reading the same information on Wikipedia, but the truth is that things have gotten so out of hand that you can't even believe that certain things have happened until you see them with your own two eyes. Or until a trustworthy filmmaker has laid out the facts against an ominous score and punctuated them with enough infographics and interview footage to remind you that truth is stranger than fiction and getting weirder every day.
An example: Back in February of 2017, you probably heard something about how Kim Jong-un's older brother was assassinated in broad daylight at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. You might still recall that his name was Kim Jong-nam, or that he was murdered by two young women who snuck up behind him in the middle of the crowded terminal, cupped his eyes as if they were surprising an old friend, and wiped VX nerve agent — the deadliest substance on Earth — directly into his eyes. Some people out there may even remember that one of the killers wore a white t-shirt that had “LOL” written across the chest in thick black letters. But did any of that information really sink in? Did the sheer audacity of that hit linger in your mind the same way it might have had you seen it in the James Bond movie where it belongs? Did the geopolitical implications of the attack inspire you to follow the story as it fanned out to a matrix of ambassadors and secret agents that spread across the whole of Asia? Or did it all seem too farfetched to settle into the part of your brain that tries to make sense of world history? There were rumors that the two women had been under the impression they were participating in a Japanese prank show, but that deranged twist only made the news seem more disposable somehow.
This is hardly a new phenomenon, even if it's now occurring at an unprecedented pace: The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist, and history's most dangerous men have always been those who knew that rational people would struggle to imagine their crimes. And so it's easy enough to appreciate why Ryan White decided to make a documentary that explains the death of Kim Jong-nam in the most straightforward terms possible; why “Assassins” eschews subplots, color commentary, or even any kind of residual context as it walks us through what happened. Indeed, the story is so outlandish — and the film so dry — that it's hard not to be impressed by the discipline White showed in refusing to have more fun with it. He knew that the facts would prove riveting enough on their own and they do, and he wanted to capture this liquid moment...
For the first time in 35 years, Eddie Murphy returned to host Saturday Night Live. Since this was also the Christmas episode, the pressure was on for this to truly be a television event. Thankfully, Eddie Murphy didn’t disappoint, and he brought a bunch of his friends with him, not to mention the cavalcade of guest stars that’s been popping up for the Democratic debate spoofing. The result was not only the best episode of the season, but one of the best episodes in recent memory.

Gumby Returns – Even when the Weekend Update guest segments are among the best bits of the night, I relegate them to the standard Weekend Update section. But when Eddie Murphy returns as Gumby and shows why he was one of the best cast members to ever grace Studio 8H with his presence, I can’t help but break from tradition. Not only does he slip right back into this character, even though it’s without make-up this time, but he even improvises a bit and gets Colin Jost and Michael Che cracking up. This was pure comedy magic.
North Pole News Report – Kenan Thompson has made a name for himself on SNL, and one of the best things he does on the show is yell in a very specific and hilarious way. But no one yells frantically and funnily quite like Eddie Murphy, and this sketch is evidence of that to the max. It’s a simple premise that makes fun of the sensationalist man on the street interviews that local news always manages to get after some kind of big accident, but Murphy plays it so well that you can’t help but crack up. It gets bigger and funnier as it goes on, and that recurring “It don’t matter what my name is!” was gold every time.
Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood – Eddie Murphy said he wanted to revisit his most popular classic characters, and it was so good to see Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood back again. Although “The L Word: Generation Q” may have tried desperately to speak to a “new generation” of queer women and non-binary folks, fresher creative voices quickly rose to the top in its place. Though people still watched. Showtime’s “Work in Progress” was the best queer comedy of the year, Netflix’s “Feel Good” was an unexpected delight, and “Vida” is returning just in time for queer audiences to catch up on the best show about queer women of color on TV. Yet another contender released a promising first trailer today: “Betty” is a stylish and youthful portrait of Brooklyn teen skaters that already appears extremely queer.
The six-part half-hour arrives on HBO from filmmaker Crystal Moselle, who quickly made waves in 2015 with her her riveting documentary hybrid “The Wolfpack.” “Betty” is adapted from her second feature, the similarly hybridized “Skate Kitchen,” which followed a group of teenage girl skaters in New York City. The film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival to positive reviews and was released by Magnolia Pictures that year.
In his B+ review of “Skate Kitchen” out of Sundance, IndieWire’s Eric Kohn wrote: “The streetwise alternative to ‘Girls,’ the movie weaves together such a complete vision of its subjects that the rest of the world barely exists. Of course, there's a long-standing precedent to capturing this subculture — ‘Kids’ did it, with more adventurous storytelling twists, more than 20 years ago — but Moselle's subjects hold their own with the surprising ability to clarify their emotions through the cathartic process of hanging out.”
“Betty” features many of the film’s original stars, most of whom had not acted before, including Kabrina Adams, Dede Lovelace, Nina Moran, Rachelle Vinberg, and Ajani Russell. All accomplished skaters in their own right, the first trailer shows the charismatic crew navigating various crushes and friendship trials with compelling panache and humor.
“Betty” is directed, co-written, and executive produced by Moselle. Lesley Arfin and Patricia Breen are also co-writers. Arfin, who also EPs, is a comedy writer best known for co-creating the Netflix series “Love” with Judd Apatow and Paul Rust.
