Universal Pictures has released the final trailer for 1917. This is the latest effort from director Sam Mendes, who most recently directed a couple of entries in the James Bond franchise, Skyfall and Spectre. This time around, Mendes is taking on World War I. It seems almost inevitable that every great director will tackle a war movie at some point or another. Though, there seem to be far more World War II movies out there, which is part of what makes this intriguing. And, based on what we're seeing in this final trailer, it's going to be a chaotic and cinematic spectacle made all the more compelling since it's based on real events.

>The 1917 trailer kicks off by setting up the tale at hand. A couple of soldiers are given the unenviable task of having to deliver a message to a battalion who are about to walk into a trap. If the mission fails, a lot of men are going to die. We then preview some of the action that will unfold, which is tense and big in scale. The major hook here is that Sam Mendes worked with Oscar-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins to craft the movie as one, never-ending shot. We don't get a huge sense of that here, but connecting all of these sequences together seamlessly seems like it could make for a truly stunning experience.

The cast includes George MacKay Captain Fantastic, Dean-Charles Chapman Game of Thrones, Colin Firth The King's Speech, Benedict Cumberbatch Avengers: Endgame, Richard Madden Rocketman, Andrew Scott Fleabag, Daniel Mays Line of Duty, Adrian Scarborough Blunt Talk, Jamie Parker Valkyrie, Nabhaan Rizwan Informer and Claire Duburcq in her feature debut. Sam Mendes co-wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns Penny Dreadful. Pippa Harris, Jayne-Ann Tenggren, Callum McDougall and Brian Oliver serve as producers alongside Mendes. Jeb Brody, Oleg Petrov, Ignacio Salazar-Simpson and Ricardo Marco Bude are executive producers.

1917 takes place at the of World War I and centers on two young British soldiers, Schofield George MacKay and Blake Dean-Charles Chapman. The two men are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against the clock, they must cross through enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop hundreds of soldiers from walking right into a deadly attack, with Blake's own brother amongst them.

War movies, when well executed, are almost surefire awards season bets. This seems to be no exception. Critics, thus far, have been very kind to the WWI epic as it currently boasts a 94 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It earned several major Golden Globes nominations already including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Score. It's also expected to be invited to the party when the Academy Award nominations are revealed for this year. 1917 arrives on December 25 in limited release, with an expansion set to follow on January 10.
